RECOMMENDED LIGHT FIXTURES
How to choose a good outdoor lighting device?
Below is a non-exhaustive list of luminaires recommended by the Mont-Mégantic International Dark Sky Reserve.
The recommended products have been selected to meet the best practice criteria in outdoor lighting and to satisfy a variety of needs. Many other suitable products may be found on the market, though availability may vary depending on your region.
Since the intensity and the period of illumination will depend on the specific use, these criteria are not considered in the selection of the listed luminaires. However, it is recommended to choose a low wattage system and use lighting controls such as a switch, dimmer, timer or motion detector.

ORIENTATION
The light fixture must be designed
and installed so that it emits
no light above the horizon.
The luminaire must therefore be classified
full cut-off or U0.
Luminaires that do not have an official classification but whose light source is fully shielded are also accepted.
Recessed luminaires or luminaires fitted with visors may also meet this specification.

COLOUR
The light source must have a
colour temperature below 2200K
or emit less than 10% of blue light*.
PC-amber LEDs (1800K to 2200K), as well as amber LEDs, are therefore widely recommended.
The use of a suitable mix of white and amber LEDs, an optical filter limiting the amount of blue light and Sodium light sources (HPS and LPS) are also recommended.
For low power sources (less than 1000 lumens), the colour temperature can reach up to 3000K or 20% blue light.
* Percentage of blue light represents light emitted in the wavelength range of 405 to 530 nanometers compared to the wavelength range of 380 to 730 nanometers.
ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS:
RESIDENTIAL USE AND
MODERATE LUMINOSITY
The availability of appropriate lighting fixtures varies between retailers. It is preferable to visit a specialized retailer able to offer quality advice. Nearby mount Mégantic, Royaume du Luminaire, Home Depot, RONA and Réno Dépôt offer the greater choice of adequate fixtures. However, certain models are only available online. Some acceptable fixtures can also be found on Amazon.
For fixtures sold without a lightbulb, yellow lightbulbs also known as "bug repellent" will have the least impact on the nocturnal ecosystem. If unavailable, choose a low-power lightbulb with a low color temperature.
Download our list of appropriate fixtures listed by retailers in the region which respect the principles of eco-lighting.
*This list is not exhaustive. Supply and inventory may vary.

HIGH LUMINOSITY
AND PUBLIC LIGHTING
The Mont-Mégantic International Dark Sky Reserve is a world leader in the use of nocturnal environment-respecting lighting technology.
While many cities across the world have converted their lighting to high luminosity white LEDs, resulting in greater repercussions of nocturnal light, the Preserve has fostered the development and installation of amber LEDs, for both street lighting and the high power lighting sometimes necessary for commercial and industrial use.
While more and more low color temperature LED lighting has become available in recent times, most of the market remains in the 3000K to 5000K range. Even at 3000K, the level of power commonly used results in a high amount of light pollution.
Luckily, some lighting makers and retailers now offer the option de "Amber", "PC-Amber" and 2200K on various models of lighting apparatus.
It also needs to be said that, even if less frequently deployed nowadays, High Pressure Sodium lamps emit between 8% and 10% blue light and remain an acceptable choice.
